Clint Smith said ”Carrying a gun isn’t supposed to be comfortable, it is supposed to be a comfort”. I agree to an extent but I also know most people (myself included) will leave a gun at home if it’s causing a lot of discomfort over the course of a day. The same goes for magazine carriers. The popularity of smaller limited capacity firearms, that are more comfortable and easier to conceal, dictate the carry of an extra magazine. However, anyone who has carried one in a typical belt pouch knows the magazine(s) will often let you know they’re there with a poke in the side or back every now and then. Pocket carry isn’t a great option either. I want quick access so I can reload as fast as I’m capable and pros will tell you digging around in a cargo pocket doesn’t cut it. So I wondered if there was a better option. That’s when a family member recommended the Horizontal MagHolder.

Horizontal MagHolder
The Horizontal Magholder is injection molded and made in the USA. Each is designed for specific pistols and luckily they make one for my carry gun of choice at the moment – the M&P Shield. Retention is friction based with little rails inside that grab the magazine when it’s inserted. The fit is tight at first but smooths out over time. After repeated use, I noticed it does leave a small wear (love?) mark on each side of my Shield magazines, but nothing significant enough to impair their function.
The pocket clip is strong and has a little lip that ensures the Magholder does not slip off the belt. The backside of the clip has a rough surface that helps prevent it from sliding around.
When I wear the Horizontal Magholder, I forget it’s even there. It just becomes an extension of whatever belt I’m wearing. Access is straight forward. As pictured below, if carried on the weak side for a right handed shooter, a quick tug backward frees the magazine from the holder. The bullets are pointed downward so the magazine can be inserted into the gun without changing it’s orientation resulting in a faster transition.

You can also wear the Magholder in a strong side Appendix carry orientation that can be used with a cross draw motion, which would be even faster since you don’t have to reach back for it.
Overall, I’m very pleased with the Horizontal Magholder. It makes carrying an extra magazine much less of a chore and it is comforting to know I have extra rounds at my disposal in a life threatening situation.
The Horizontal Magholder is available for a variety of single and double stack handguns including 1911, Glock, XDM/XDS, S&W M&P, and Sig. It retails for $25 and is available direct from Magholder via their online store.
