When I’m hiking or on the road, I love finding ways to use my gear to do different things so I don’t have to pack as much – reducing bulk and saving weight. I’m also a caffeine addict that gets cranky if I don’t get my regular morning cup of coffee or if I’m forced to drink weak coffee. This guy is never “runnin’ on Dunkin” if I can help it. So imagine my excitement when I came across the Press-Bot Kickstarter project.

Press-Bot French Coffee Press
The Press-Bot turns a regular 32oz wide mouth Nalgene bottle into a high quality french press.
The Press-Bot is not a new product. It was available from a company called Venture Design Works several years ago and then went out of production. Brian Siebert, a Northern Arizona based backcountry guide, has purchased the rights to the design to bring it back to market.
Based on reviews of the original design that I’ve read, it sounds like it works pretty well. Assuming improvements haven’t been incorporated this time around, the two main downsides are:
- The filter isn’t perfect so a small amount of grounds will make it into the bottom of your cup
- A Nalgene gets hot to handle when filled with boiling water
To address the second issue, some funding options include a Nalgene Coozy. I recommend including it unless you already have one.
The Press-Bot is already well over it’s funding goal with 7 days to go (the original product had a cult-like following among backpackers). The first orders are estimated to ship next month.
