On a recent three day weekend trip to Fort Lauderdale, I decided to only take one bag on the airplane – a prototype which I’m field testing. Yeah, don’t ask. I can’t divulge any details until later in the year. ;-) I normally take a day pack in addition to my carry-on when I travel so that I can use it for EDC once I reach my destination, but I was determined to keep things simple this time. Luckily, one of my favorite bag companies had just the solution. The Tom Bihn Packing Cube Backpack pulls double duty. In transit, as the name suggests, it’s a large packing cube. Once unpacked, it converts into an 18 Liter, 1,100 cubic inch backpack made out of tough 200 denier Dyneema® nylon that weighs only 9 ounces.

The pack has two compartments and an O-ring inside in the main compartment. There are two long webbing backpack straps and a simple carry handle. That’s pretty much it. Nothing fancy but it allowed me to carry some essentials for my day at the beach and it didn’t look out place with all the string bags and totes that people were carrying around with them.
The overall size of the Tom Bihn Packing Cube Backpack is 18″ x 12.25″ x 3.5″ (for the Tri-Star/Western Flyer variant) so it can hold a decent amount of kit if you need to in a pinch. Just be realistic about your load-out considering there is no padding or structure with this bag.
