Hi, my name is Blaine, and I’m a Bag Addict (Hi Blaine). My journey into addiction started well before I started this site. I love bags of all kinds – backpacks, messenger bags, slings, duffles, totes, luggage, pouches and even fanny packs. OK, maybe not fanny packs.
I’ve bought, carried, sold, and collected dozens of bags as I’ve tried in vain to find the holy grail. The search continues but some certainly come closer than others. Over time, I’ve realized that some of my acquisitions have been silly – born out of want and not out of need. It brings to mind a quote from Fight Club, one of my favorite movies of all time.
Now before adding to my collection, I ask myself some qualifying questions. Will the bag in question fulfill a role, now or in the future, in my carry system (grab-n-go, bail out bag, weekend EDC, laptop carry, travel carry-on, travel check-in, concealed carry, etc.)? Do I already have a bag of the same type and how is this one an improvement over the bag I already have? Will the bag in question be practical for carrying my intended load-out? Does the bag have features that allow for customization over time as my needs change? Will I look stupid carrying it and therefore, after enduring much ridicule from my wife and concerned friends, will it sit in my bag bunker and collect dust? And last, but certainly not least, can I afford it without going into hock up to my ears?
I find that asking these questions and providing honest answers to myself effectively weeds out most of the frivolous purchases. But I’m not going to lie. I occasionally acquire bags I don’t need. Why you ask? Because I’m a bag addict.
