Gear Diary: It Ain’t Easy Being Green

I purchased my first Shagmaster Hoodie a couple of weeks ago.  My initial impressions have left me wondering why I waited this long.  I’m a huge fan of Triple Aught Design’s hoodies.  I also own two Rangers, a Stealth, and I’ve been field testing a Praetorian.  The Shagmaster is warmer than any of them and it can be paired with a Stealth jacket or any shell made for use in combination with a base layer if you need warmth and water repellency.  The only downside is you look a bit “different” wearing it.  I opted for Combat green and when I first un-boxed the Shagmaster and put it on, my wife said I looked like “a big furry Muppet”.  Whatever.  As I’ve said, I value my wife’s fashion sense but this one isn’t going back.

Speaking of TAD Gear, they had their Annual Dogpatch Warehouse Sale this weekend.  If you couldn’t make it to San Francisco, you’re still in luck.  TAD made some discounted products available online.  Much of it is gone but you can still score some good deals.  Especially if you’re an odd sized person.  I personally scored a 2011 model Stealth LT in black for $160 yesterday.  We reviewed the Stealth LT earlier this year and I can tell you that’s a steal of the highest order.  If you hurry, there are still some available in 2XL.

I’m starting the search for a good Level 1 and/or Level 2 Handgun Training Class.  Next year, from a spend standpoint, I’m going to rank certain skill training over more gear.  That might sound like an odd thing for a gear reviewer to say, but it’s the truth.  I’ll always refine my EDC as new kit becomes available and fill any gaps where needed, but to me it makes more sense to further develop my skills versus purchasing another safe queen or that fourth day pack to add to my collection.

Anyway, if anyone has taken a class that they liked, please drop a suggestion in the comments.  I’m willing to travel but finding one here in the Midwest would be ideal.  In addition to the firearms training, I’m also targeting first aid and navigation skills in 2015.
