Combat Flip Flops is a company that I can get behind. Their idea was simple: create an environment that gives people living in post-conflict nations the opportunity to peacefully rebuild their economy by manufacturing “badass products”. It was all started by two ex-Army Rangers would wanted to do right by people less fortunate than themselves. I challenge you to watch the video below and not be moved by their mission.
The keffiyeh or kufiya (Arabic: كوفية kūfiyyah, meaning “from the city of Kufa” (الكوفة); plural كوفيات kūfiyyāt), also known as a ghutrah (غُترَة), shemagh (شماغ šmāġ), ḥaṭṭah (حَطّة), mashadah (مَشَدة), chafiye (Persian: چَفیِه), cemedanî (Kurdish: جه مه داني) or sudra (Hebrew: סודרא), is a traditional Middle Eastern headdress fashioned from a square scarf, usually made of cotton.
They have many uses in a survival situation. It can protect the head and neck from sun, sand, and cold. A shemagh can be used to dress a wound or as a Tourniquet, as a sling to stabilize a broken limb, or to collect drinking water.
Combat Flip Flops make a couple different versions of the Shemagh. They are all sourced and embroidered in a woman-owned factory in Kabul, Afghanistan. Their standard Shemagh comes in OD and retails for $20. The special edition Operation Hawkeye Shemagh benefits the Station and Team 5 Medical Foundations. It comes in a black-and-white pattern and retails for $30. Combat Flip Flops even makes a cashmere version called the Cashmagh.
You weren’t an operator in Afganistan and don’t know how to tie a Shemagh? Combat Flip Flops has you covered. Their Youtube Channel has over a dozen videos detailing how to tie and use one. Here is one example, which is my favorite, called the “Cowboy”.
