One of the first modifications I make to any factory firearm destined for home defense or concealed carry is to add a quality set of night sights. Statistically, most defensive encounters occur at night and therefore having a sighting system that can adapt to low light conditions is a good idea if they don’t come included out-of-the-box. You won’t be seeing a “How To” post on sight installation by me anytime soon because I prefer to leave that work to a professional.
James Nicholas, otherwise known as XDMAN, is an active contributor on XDForums but he’s also a gunsmith who has done sight installs and other services since 2003. James has many happy customers on the forums and I’ve used his services the last two times I’ve had sights installed – first on my XD45 Compact and just this week on my M&P Shield. I went with XS Big Dot Tritium Sights this time around and James did a marvelous job. Like the last time, there wasn’t a mark on the firearm post installation.

If you don’t have a local gunsmith you trust, then I highly recommend XDMAN. This sight install ran $25 including return shipping. I sent my slide to him Priority Mail on 1/18 and had it back in hand on 1/25. That’s awesome service.
Note: If you purchase sights from James, then installation is included. In this case, I had received my new sights as a Christmas gift (thanks again Dad) so I sent them along with the slide and paid separately for the install. James also does trigger kits and slide refinishing so you can opt to get additional work done while your sights are being installed.
