Gear Diary: Setting Up the Tom Bihn Guide’s Pack for Laptop Carry

In our review of the Tom Bihn Guide’s Pack, I mentioned it’s not really set up to accommodate a laptop out of the box.  You can carry a Cache or Vertical Brain Cell loose in the main compartment but you can do that with any pack.  This is why the Guide’s Pack isn’t listed specifically among the Laptop Bags on Tom Bihn’s site.

With that said, I’ve come up with a decent solution for this.  To rig the Guide’s Pack for laptop or tablet carry, I’ve used 1/8″ shock cord strung through the O-rings located on either side of the top of the main compartment. The shock cord is pulled taut via an ITW Toaster Ellipse Cordloc and the excess is tied off.

With the Gatekeeper Clips facing out, you can then suspend an appropriately sized Vertical Cache with Rails on the Shock Cord. This holds the Cache in place against the frame sheet and keeps it from shifting around inside the main compartment.

If you want to do this mod and don’t have the raw materials, I personally recommend Supply Captain for the shock cord.  They sell it in 50 foot bundles in several different colors including the coyote that I used.  I’ve ordered from them many times and have never had an issue.

Unfortunately, Supply Captain is out of the ITW Cord Locks in Coyote but White Moose Trading Company carries them in packs of five.  Note: I’m not endorsing White Moose.  Unlike Supply Captain, I haven’t ordered from them previously.  Just using my Google Fu to help you guys out. ;-)
