Last week we received the brand new redesigned Rickshaw Commuter 2.1 Laptop Bag from Rickshaw Bagworks in San Francisco and I decided to start field testing it on my daily commute into Chicago.
The Commuter 2.1 can be customized and one of the options we asked for was the X-Pac™ technical sailcloth exterior. According to Rickshaw, X-Pac™ is a special high-performance sailcloth for ocean-going racing boats manufactured by Dimension-Polyant in Connecticut. The high-tech laminate is lightweight, abrasion resistant and waterproof. And a special internal layer of tensile strands gives the fabric a distinctive diamond pattern.
I was glad we did. The first day out, I got caught in an absolute deluge and it continued to rain on and off through-out the day with flood warnings being posted by the National Weather Service. Fortunately, the X-Pac did it’s job and kept everything in the bag bone dry including my laptop and tablet. You can see in the picture below that the rain just beaded up nicely on the exterior. Another key is that Rickshaw designed the flap to completely cover the corners so that a gap doesn’t expose the main compartment to the elements.
