Gear Diary: GoRuck GR1 Sternum Strap and Pouches

One of my early frustrations with the GoRuck GR1 has been the lack of a sternum strap.  I’m still not sure why GoRuck didn’t include one and they haven’t sprinkled the GR1 with magic fairy dust that makes it an unnecessary option.  Yes, the wider shoulder straps do help and the wearer can cinch them tight to keep the pack from moving around too much.  But, the reality is that everyone’s frame is different and depending on how broad shouldered you are will dictate how much the pack tends to shift and want to slip off the shoulders.  That’s where an adjustable sternum strap can really help adjust the fit and stabilize things.

Unfortunately, GoRuck doesn’t make a sternum strap.  The Mystery Ranch Chestie MIL is one option but $15 plus the cost of UPS Ground shipping is pretty costly.  Ultimately, I opted for a Maxpedition Sternum Strap.  Not everyone is aware that Maxpedition sells replacement parts for their packs.  Their Sternum Strap cost me $12 including shipping.

The Maxpedition Khaki is almost a perfect match to GoRuck’s Coyote.  I also like that Maxpedition’s strap features 1″ webbing versus the standard .75″.  It’s robust, looks right at home on the overbuilt GR1 and works perfectly.

I’ve also started to consider pouch options.  I’ve already written about adding the Zulu Mega Admin to the PALS in the interior main compartment.  I’ve discovered that TAD Gear’s Coyote Khaki is a perfect match to GoRuck’s Khaki which makes their pouches an option (when they stock them).  I’ve added an iComm pouch to the side PALS webbing for my camera.  It can also fit smaller Smartphones and other similarly sized kit.  I will probably add a TAD S2 pouch or a Maxpedition 4″ flashlight/knife sheath to the other side.
