I recently received a GoPro camera as a gift and quickly realized that I needed a case that could protect the camera in transit and provide storage for its many accessories. I stumbled upon the Lowepro Dashpoint AVC 2 while browsing in a Best Buy. It was on sale during the holiday so I decided to give it a try. I’m glad I did.

Lowepro Dashpoint AVC 2
The Dashpoint AVC 2 is a light weight composite shell case designed to hold two GoPro cameras or, in my case, one camera with a bunch of extras. After using the AVC 2, I’ve found there is a lot to like and only a couple of things I’d change.
For instance, I love that the case has lots of organization. I’m one of those people who likes everything to be in a certain place so it’s there when I need it. One side of the AVC 2 is designed to separate larger items including the camera(s). The dividers can be moved so that the case can be customized to secure different sizes of kit (even non-GoPro stuff). Lowepro wisely went with a light gray lining for better contrast in low light conditions.
The other side, which is covered by a flap that is held in place by hook and loop, provides GRID-IT type storage for cords, mounts, and other smaller items that would tend to get lost. The flap, which is padded, also keeps the items in the other compartment from getting dinged up.
The panel is removable, which is a nice feature that I’ve used while setting up the camera. I wish Lowepro wouldn’t have left space between the rows and include more interlocking elastic bands like the GRID-IT. That would have been slightly more functional.
This case won’t add much weight to your load-out. It weighs a mere 0.4 kg or slightly less than a pound. That’s lighter than a typical hard case. At 21.6 x 9.3 x 21.6 cm (8.50 x 3.66 x 8.50 in), the Dashpoint AVC 2 is also small enough to be carried in most backpacks. To give you an idea, here is the case in the main compartment of the latest version of the Triple Aught Design Fast Pack Litespeed, which is a smaller 22 Liter everyday carry pack that we’re currently field testing. It fits with room to spare.
The only other quibble I have with the Dashpoint is the lack of waterproof zippers. The GoPro is waterproof in its case, but some of the accessories aren’t. If you spend a lot of time in aquatic environments, then you’ll need to keep that in mind.
Overall, Lowepro did a nice job with the Dashpoint series. This case and the smaller AVC 1 are both nice alternatives to hard cases like those available from Pelican and others. They won’t offer the same level of hard-use protection, but they are also much lighter and sell for a fraction of the cost.
The Lowepro Dashpoint AVC 2 retails for $52 at most retailers and is available in both blue and black.
