EDC’ers are always looking for ways to simplify their carry. My wallet is full of cards including bank, credit, loyalty, and gift cards. I love my Spec Ops and Rigger wallets but sometimes I’d just rather go with go with something smaller like this Vvault Front Pocket Wallet.
The number of cards I have really don’t allow me to do that unless I leave some behind. One potential solution I stumbled upon is the Plastc Card.
It’s a device that resembles a typical credit card but that’s where the similarities end. The Plastc Card combines mag stripe, NFC, chip, PIN, and bar code capabilities into one device. The user uses an iOS/Android companion app to add all their cards (even including a work access card) to the device. Once on the card, access to each is controlled via an e-ink touchscreen.
My immediate concern was – what if I lose the card with all my information on it? Plastc Card is actually more secure than a regular credit or debit card. It can be locked down via a PIN…
And the Companion Wallet App can be setup to give a proximity alert if the card is separated from its owner. All information can be wiped remotely and re-sync’d if the card is recovered later.
If it works as advertised, as far as I can tell, the only downsides to the Plastc Card are its cost ($150) and that you have to re-charge it every 30 days. Otherwise, it looks like a great option for minimalists and anyone looking for a more secure payment solution.
Plastc Card created this video highlighting how the card works.
Plastc Card is now available for pre-order. It ships Summer of 2015.
