Gear Diary: New Use for the Tom Bihn Lower Modular Pocket

Darcy from Tom Bihn alerted me to another mounting option for the Tom Bihn Lower Modular Pocket.  Using the Gatekeeper Clips on the pocket, you can attach it to the inside of the Tom Bihn Smart Alec using the webbing loops that are normally used to attach a Brain Cell.  Just remove the Annex Clips and you can use both rows of webbing and the top four Gatekeeper clips on the Pocket to secure it in place.

There are a few benefit to this.  First, it doesn’t add bulk to the outside of the pack.  It also provides some additional internal organization – especially for items you don’t want to get wet since the pocket has YKK Aquaguard zippers and would be even more shielded from the elements inside the main compartment.  Finally, if you use a hydration reservoir, it can still mount to the O-Ring behind the Lower Modular Pocket and the pocket actually provides added stability to the bladder so it doesn’t move around inside the pack.  In the picture below, I’ve attached the pocket along with a Source Tactical WXP 3L reservoir and I still have room to store my Northface jacket and other items.

If you already have the pocket then hopefully this gives you another option for using it with your Smart Alec.  If you don’t have one, the Tom Bihn Lower Modular pocket is available from Tom Bihn’s website and retails for $40.
